Heritage Walk through Nizamuddin

What this tour is about: The Nizamuddin area is a medieval settlement named after the highly venerated 14th century Sufi saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. The settlement contains medieval era tombs, shrines, mausoleums and step-wells. There is a vibrant community life centred around the dargah (tomb) of Hazrat Nizamuddin. The dargah keeps alive the cultural heritage of Sufi spirituality, through the poetry of Amir Khusrau and evening Qawwali performances.

Our tour starts with a visit to Chaunsath Khamba (The 64-Pillars), a beautiful Mughal-era monument. Next, we will see the tomb of the great Urdu poet Ghalib, who lived and composed during the dying days of the Mughal empire. Walking past Ghalib's Academy, we will come through a busy local bazaar, to reach the Nizamuddin dargah complex with its mosque, historical tombs and its miraculous step-well. At the dargah, we will spend some time listening to the Qawwali performance.
Tour Notes: This is a traditional part of the city and we are visiting religious shrines. We therefore ask that you dress conservatively / appropriately. Women are required to bring a stole or shawl. Men are required to cover their heads, for which a scarf or large handkerchief would be ideal. Shorts are not ok for both men and women. You have to take off footwear to enter shrines, so wearing complicated lace-up shoes will be inconvenient. Do not bring super-expensive or designer footwear.
